Before cameras and reporters at a Lambeau Field news conference the Green Bay Packers quarterback said It s been a great career. It s over. . I just don t think I can give anything else. Favre entered the press room by himself in blue jeans and an untucked button down sports shirt struggled emotionally to start his comments. He tried to gather himself taking deep breaths and wiping tears. I promised I wouldn t get emotional he said. It s never easy. I ve watched hundreds of players retire and you wonder what it would be like. Favre explained that during this past season he would be studying video the night before games a! nd two hours after a game he d be doing the same. At some point you ve just to relax and enjoy it Favre said and I found myself not enjoying it as much . It was taking its toll on me. As for possibly changing his mind and playing again he said I m not up to the challenge anymore. . I m going out on top. . As they say all good things must come to an end. He said there was nothing the Packers management could have said to talk him out of retiring. I made it . and I ve got to be at peace with that. Philosophically speaking Favre was asked how he hopes to be remembered. I think we all want to be liked and have good things said about us he said. I hope people appreciate me and the way I played the game as much as I appreciate them. What s next in Favre s life Nothing he said letting the word hang in the room s silence I m going to stick to that until I want to do something else. He then gave credit to his wife Deanna for these words See life through the front windshield and not the rear view mirror. Before today Favre the face of the franchise and ! a certain Hall of Fame inductee had only explained his decision in a telephone voice mail message to ESPN s Chris Mortensen. He said in the voice message that he wasn t up for fighting what he saw as the long odds of the winning a Super Bowl next season. Not everyone is convinced that Favre is giving up the game. Former Cowboys quarterback Troy Aikman said he wouldn t be surprised if Favre changes his mind. And former Packers coach Mike Sherman said Favre will definitely have second thoughts about his decision.
