These days Walters the dealer s used car sales manager skips most of those events. He still is buying as many used cars though. Every morning he logs onto SmartAuction a Web site run by General Motors Corp. s financing arm to bid on leased cars that have been returned to the company. Last year he made about half of his used car purchases on the site. I don t have to spend the whole day on the pavement Walters said. Internet sales are transforming the billion! North American used car auction business. Since the s giant regional auction yards have been the primary place for dealers to buy and sell cars previously used for rentals or leases. Auto makers and dealers still send many used vehicles to the auction houses by truck. On auction day buyers from dealerships around the region inspect the cars and bid for the ones they want. Winning bidders send their purchases back to their dealership on trucks. About . million cars were sold that way last year according to the National Auto Auction Association. Online auctions allow buyers and sellers to meet without traveling to a regional auction. Industry observers say the online portion of the market has grown rapidly in the past few years to account for percent to percent of industry sales. During the business to business dot com craze some entrepreneurs had higher hopes for the online auto auction industry. In a group of Stanford University business school graduates raised more than m! illion for an online auction company AutoDaq Corp. Its chief rival was AutoTradeCenter.com Inc. an online site created by a group of auto wholesalers. By the market hadn t grown as fast as they had hoped so the companies merged and formed AutoTradeCenter Inc. which says it will sell nearly cars this year. Substantial savings But the real winners in online auctions are the auto makers. General Motors Corp. says it sells about off lease vehicles a year or percent of its total sales of such vehicles online through SmartAuction. The company estimates it saves to per car it sells online. Honda Motor Co. says its receives substantial savings by selling off lease vehicles via a private Web site managed by AutoTradeCenter. DaimlerChrysler AG launched Web operations in February and since then has sold percent of its off lease cars online. Many also believe that the live bidding process can often garner higher prices. Still some auction companies are making exploratory for! ays into cyberspace. The largest U.S. wholesaler Manheim Auto Auction a unit of Cox Enterprises Inc. said sales on its Web site have increased percent to cars this year compared with the company s total annual sales of five million cars. Dean H. Eisner chief executive of Manheim said he believed that online transactions could grow to as much as percent to percent of the market. There still remain good reasons to bring cars to auction sites he said Part of it is if you re a rental car company you need a place to put your cars when the new fleet comes in. Many auto makers also like physical auctions because those venues provide a benchmark for prices in the industry. Ford is testing some Internet sales techniques but sells nearly all of its off lease cars through traditional auctions. Buying sight unseen General Motors Acceptance Corp. the financing unit that owns most of the off! lease vehicles started SmartAuction in when it was selling record numbers of leased vehicles. Bill Ploog GMAC s general director of remarketing said the idea came from his boss who was worried about the cost of auctioning all those vehicles when their leases expired. At first GMAC simply faxed a list of vehicles to dealers in the Michigan areas to see if any of them would buy the cars sight unseen. Lo and behold they did Ploog said. Cultural democracy needed to protect regional culture Mushahid Uzbek ambassador says Alisher Navoi was the first to create poem in Turkic dialect Staff Report ISLAMABAD South Asia needs a rise in cultural diplomacy to preserve and exchange cultural heritage of the region Senate Foreign Relations Committee Chairman Mushahid Hussain said on Saturday. He was speaking at a conference to commemorate the th birthday of Uzbek poet Alisher Navoi organised by the Pakistan Academy of Letters PAL in collaboration with the Pakistan Central Asia Friendship Association. Mushahid Hussain said South Asia holds a distinction in the world because of strong literary cultural and religious ties which needed to be further strengthened. We are planning to hold a conference on culture in May to find out the common culture of our region he said. The senator said South Asian scholars would be invited to study the common cultural heritage of the region and the teachings of Sufis. These cultural ties ! need to be transformed into strong economic collaboration he said. Uzbek Ambassador Oybek Arif Usmanov said he was impressed by a book on Navoi titled Uzbekistan s Prominent Poet Alisher Navoi published by PAL. The book contains Urdu translations of best ghazals and qasidas of Navoi. Rahmanberdi uhammadjanov has done the translations. Turkic dialect Usmanov said Navoi was inspired by poetry of Hafiz Saadi Umar Khayam Kamol Hujandi and Abdurrahman Jami. Navoi became the best Turkic poet and the first to create his poem in Turkic dialect which gave basics to the modern Uzbek language he said. Navoi always tried to overcome conflicts through peaceful efforts and compromises he said adding that the deeds and dreams of Navoi were always intended for a better and peaceful society. International Islamic University President Dr Anwar Hussain Siddiqui said Navoi s contribution to the Turkish language was incomparable. At Navoi s time Arabic was the language of prose and Persian of p! oetry. Turkish was considered a substandard language but Navoi dared to break the tradition by writing poetry in Turkish he said Society of Asian Civilisation SAC President Dr ZA Zaidi said Navoi was a scholar painter calligrapher and a statesman of high calibre. He believed that the greatness of a human being doesn t lie in accumulation of wealth but in the works for welfare of other human beings he said. Two Chinese businesses and a U.S. company were indicted yesterday in the tainted pet food incidents that killed dozens of animals last year and raised worries about products made in China. Xuzhou Anying Biologic Technology Development Co. Suzhou Textiles Silk Light Industrial Products Arts and Crafts I E Co. and Las Vegas based ChemNutra Inc. were charged in two separate but related indictments. The U.S. attorney s office in Kansas City said the tainted food led to the death and serious illness of pets in the United States last year. One of the indictments charges China s Xuzhou Anying Biologic and Suzhou Textiles with counts of introduction of adulterated food into interstate comme! rce and counts of introduction of misbranded food into interstate commerce. Miller were charged with counts of introduction of adulterated food into interstate commerce counts of introduction of misbranded food into interstate commerce and one count of conspiracy to commit wire fraud. According to the indictment ChemNutra picked up the tainted gluten products shipped from China in Kansas City then sold it to makers of various brands of pet foods. The indictment alleges that the melamine was added to make the gluten meet the required standard for protein content specified in the contract between Suzhou and ChemNutra. In these days we re working to avoid losing our flag carrier and Milan s Malpensa airport. Our proposal is the only one that defends the real interests of Alitalia its shareholders the country and Malpensa it said. According to daily La Stampa the group led by Air One which is financially backed by Intesa Sanpaolo may include Pirelli with a small stake. Alitalia is currently in exclusive talks for a link up with Air France KLM which was chosen as the preferred bidder for the government s . pct stake. Air France plans include a reduction of Alitalia operations at Malpensa. An Air One official declined to add further det! ails on possible partners adding that once a court hearing on Alitalia is completed this week the company is ready. It does not need months. An administrative court is due to hear tomorrow Air One s challenge to the December government decision to choose Air France KLM as exclusive bidder with access to a data room to prepare a binding offer. Air One s statement said its binding offer can be prepared in the same timescale given to Air France KLM. The Air One official declined to comment on any financial changes for a new bid adding that the previous valuation of euro cent for Alitalia shares should be looked at as part of an overall bid. I am not going to enter in the details of the offer. It has to be looked at overall like a book is not judged on a single line he said. On its non binding offer in December Air One said the government judged financial commitments by international banks as insufficient . Air One said these banks can only make these commitments binding with a! binding Air One bid adding in the government s failed Alitalia auction in first half they were judged adequate . Pirelli declined to comment on joining an Air One consortium. An industry source said Italian newspaper reports exaggerate and Pirelli chairman Marco Tronchetti Provera is considering taking a small stake if everybody gets together on a bid. It is evolving. Everything is up in the air. No one is talking about a lot of money.
