Cultural democracy needed to protect regional culture Mushahid Uzbek ambassador says Alisher Navoi was the first to create poem in Turkic dialect Staff Report ISLAMABAD South Asia needs a rise in cultural diplomacy to preserve and exchange cultural heritage of the region Senate Foreign Relations Committee Chairman Mushahid Hussain said on Saturday. He was speaking at a conference to commemorate the th birthday of Uzbek poet Alisher Navoi organised by the Pakistan Academy of Letters PAL in collaboration with the Pakistan Central Asia Friendship Association. Mushahid Hussain said South Asia holds a distinction in the world because of strong literary cultural and religious ties which needed to be further strengthened. We are planning to hold a conference on culture in May to find out the common culture of our region he said. The senator said South Asian scholars would be invited to study the common cultural heritage of the region and the teachings of Sufis. These cultural ties ! need to be transformed into strong economic collaboration he said. Uzbek Ambassador Oybek Arif Usmanov said he was impressed by a book on Navoi titled Uzbekistan s Prominent Poet Alisher Navoi published by PAL. The book contains Urdu translations of best ghazals and qasidas of Navoi. Rahmanberdi uhammadjanov has done the translations. Turkic dialect Usmanov said Navoi was inspired by poetry of Hafiz Saadi Umar Khayam Kamol Hujandi and Abdurrahman Jami. Navoi became the best Turkic poet and the first to create his poem in Turkic dialect which gave basics to the modern Uzbek language he said. Navoi always tried to overcome conflicts through peaceful efforts and compromises he said adding that the deeds and dreams of Navoi were always intended for a better and peaceful society. International Islamic University President Dr Anwar Hussain Siddiqui said Navoi s contribution to the Turkish language was incomparable. At Navoi s time Arabic was the language of prose and Persian of p! oetry. Turkish was considered a substandard language but Navoi dared to break the tradition by writing poetry in Turkish he said Society of Asian Civilisation SAC President Dr ZA Zaidi said Navoi was a scholar painter calligrapher and a statesman of high calibre. He believed that the greatness of a human being doesn t lie in accumulation of wealth but in the works for welfare of other human beings he said.
